Point of Rental Introduces a New Brand and a New Category

Point of Rental is introducing a new brand identity today, and with it, a new answer to an old question: What should rental software actually do for a business?
For more than 40 years, the answer was management. Track the fleet, record the transaction, run the report. Point of Rental helped write that playbook. But starting today, Sept. 1, the company is moving past it. The new tagline says it plainly: Performance is the point.
„Rental management shows what has happened,“ said Wayne Harris, CEO of Point of Rental. „It’s looking at reports that show what we did in the past. Performance is about real-time visibility, proactive issue flagging, and making decisions based on market insights and future predictions, not just history.“

Why Point of Rental Is Redefining Itself

A rebrand is also a chance to reintroduce a company to a market that may not have kept up with how much it has changed. Wayne has noticed the gap firsthand in conversations with prospects.
„When we talk to a big heavy equipment company, they’ll say, ‚Oh, I thought Point of Rental was just for events,'“ he said. „And then we’ll go talk to an event prospect, and they’re like, ‚Oh, I thought Point of Rental was just for equipment.'“
That disconnect is part of what’s driving the change. „The Point of Rental that they knew a decade ago, or maybe even five years ago, is not who we are today,“ Wayne said. „We have grown, we have matured, we have brought so many more products and so much more value to our customers. This is about aligning the Point of Rental brand to our customers‘ needs and who we are today as a company.“

Management Isn’t Enough Anymore

Wayne traces the shift back to his own start in the business, at his parents‘ rental store, when inventory lived on index cards and rates were written by hand on the back.
„You can’t run a rental store like that anymore,“ he said. Customers now expect real-time availability, real-time rates, and, as Wayne put it, deliveries „in an hour“ from the time a customer decides they need something.
Rental has shifted away from the days when even inexpensive items like shovels might be rented, toward more expensive, more complex assets that cost more to buy and maintain. „There’s just no room for error,“ Wayne said.
Features that were once a competitive edge, Wayne said, are now simply expected. What used to separate one rental software platform from another has become table stakes across the industry. Later in his talk, he added, „Margins are getting smaller, turnarounds are quicker, and every decision carries greater financial impact than ever before.“
„Rental businesses aren’t asking how they ran the business anymore,“ he said. „They’re asking how they perform better every day.“

Introducing the Rental Performance System

The category Point of Rental is putting a name to is the Rental Performance System, or RPS, and the distinction from a traditional rental management system, or RMS, is deliberate.
An RMS records what happened. An RPS does something about it.
„Rental management shows what has happened. That’s looking at reports that show what we did in the past,“ Wayne said. „Management is slower to innovate, because you have to take all of those reports and then try to figure out what that means and apply it going forward. But performance is about real-time visibility and proactive issue flagging, asking questions of the system in natural language and getting an answer back, and making decisions based on market insights and future predictions.“
„Today’s best businesses aren’t managed better,“ he said. „They’re built for performance.“

The Three Pillars of Rental Performance

Point of Rental defines rental performance across three pillars: operation performance, decision performance, and execution performance.
Pillar What It Covers
Operation performance The real-time, day-to-day running of the business. Instead of a static workflow that fires on a fixed rule, an agent watches the whole operation and acts the moment something slips, whether that’s an idle asset, overdue maintenance, a missed follow-up, or demand running out of balance across sites.
Decision performance The bigger, less frequent calls that shape the business rather than run it: what to buy, what to sell, when, and at what price. These are predictions built on machine learning and market-wide rental data, with the reasoning shown, not a gut call dressed up with a report to back it up afterward.
Execution performance How much of that work shifts from people to software. It’s a capacity and leverage story: the share of decisions and actions a team’s software can carry on its own is what can allow 20 people to do work that once took 30, without adding headcount to match.
„Are we getting more from every asset and every workflow? Are customers making better business decisions every day? Are we executing continuously to outperform competitors?“ Wayne said. „Those three pillars are the differentiation between a management system and a rental performance system.“

Put Any Rental Software to the Test

Wayne offers a simple test for evaluating any rental platform, including Point of Rental’s own. Ask three questions:
  1. Does it act without being asked?
  2. Does it tell you what’s coming?
  3. Does it do work on behalf of your team?

A platform needs a yes on all three to qualify as a rental performance system. Anything less is still management software, no matter what it’s called.

Performance is the point.

„Rental performance transforms the industry,“ Wayne said. „It’s no longer an elusive target. It’s where we’re at, and we’re not chasing that target; we’re setting the standard. We’re building tomorrow’s expectations, and we’re helping our customers perform better every day. Performance is the point.“
A new logo goes along with the rebrand, though Wayne is the first to say it isn’t the headline. „The logo is just a small part of a rebranding process,“ he said. The bigger shift, in his view, is the one described above: a company, and an industry, moving from managing rental operations to building them for performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Point of Rental changing its name?

No. Point of Rental is not changing its company name. This update is a new brand identity, along with a new category, the Rental Performance System, that describes where the company’s technology is headed.

When did the new brand launch?

Point of Rental introduced its new identity on Sept. 1, 2026.

What is a Rental Performance System?

A Rental Performance System, or RPS, is software that acts on the data it collects rather than just reporting on it. Point of Rental defines it across three pillars: operation performance, decision performance, and execution performance.

How is an RPS different from rental management software?

Rental management software, or RMS, records what already happened and requires a person to interpret the report and decide what to do next. An RPS is built to flag issues in real time, predict outcomes, and carry out some of that work itself.

What’s the three-question test for rental performance?

Does the software act without being asked? Does it tell you what’s coming? Does it do work on behalf of your team? A platform needs a yes on all three to qualify as a rental performance system.
