Taking Inventory this Thanksgiving

When I worked at my parents’ rental store, the most dreaded words were, “Wayne, you need to go take inventory.” Of course, in those days, we didn’t have Mobile WorkForce, Inventory Count feature, or tablets with Bluetooth barcode scanners. We also didn’t know about rolling inventory, where you are taking inventory all the time. My dad believed in the annual inventory method, which meant that my Christmas vacations were spent in the upstairs storage area of the store, shivering as I counted every washer and screw.

Now, many years later as I sit in my nicely heated office, the words “take inventory” don’t scare me as much. In fact, as the holiday season approaches, I enjoy taking inventory – inventory of all the things that I am thankful for in my life.

I have so many things to be thankful for.

In our business, I am thankful for great employees. A business really comes down to the people it’s made up of. Point-of-Rental is made of a remarkable team that always goes the extra mile and that makes it a great business to be a part of. They care about every customer and really accomplish an amazing job of putting “service” back into customer service.

Secondly, I am thankful for our wonderful customers. Our customers strive every day to make their business better and are happy to partner with us to help make our products better. It is amazing how empowering it is to work as a team with your customers, consistently providing valuable insight back and forth into both businesses.

I know that I hated to take inventory at my parents’ rental store, but as the holiday season is upon us, I would encourage you to do two things:

  1. Buy the Mobile WorkForce module so that your poor, freezing son may want to continue at your rental store instead of getting a programming degree so he can have a nice, warm office.
  2. Take inventory of all the things you are thankful for and let those people know how appreciative you are.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Stop Stocking So Many Parts!

We’ve all done it.   When I worked in the event industry, there was one year where people started asking about gold flatware. We jumped to stay ahead of the trend, purchasing over 1,000 pieces of gold place settings to match our existing gold-band plates. The fad never fully materialized,
